How to Sell Your Car in Adelaide

Four ways to sell, what each one really gets you, and how to decide.

There are four realistic ways to sell a car in Adelaide, and they trade money against time and hassle in fairly predictable ways. Knowing which one suits you is mostly about being honest with yourself about how much of your own time you want to spend.

Your four options

Private sale. Usually the highest price on paper. You write the ad, pay for the listing, field the messages, and hold inspections and test drives with strangers at your home. You handle the payment safely and do the transfer paperwork yourself. If the car has money owing on it, you have to clear that before the buyer will be comfortable. Expect it to take weeks rather than days.

Online buyer. Quick and convenient, and you never meet anyone. The trade-off is that you are dealing with a platform rather than a person, the price is usually adjusted after a remote inspection, and if something goes wrong there is no local office to walk into.

Dealer offer. You bring the car to a dealership, they assess it and make you an offer, and if you accept, they handle the paperwork and pay you. You are not required to buy anything. This is the fastest clean exit, and the price sits below a good private sale because the dealer carries the cost of reconditioning and the risk of holding the car.

Trade-in. The same as a dealer offer, except the value comes off the car you are buying instead of coming to you as cash. It is the least work of any option because it all happens in one transaction. Our trade-in guide covers how that works.

What Jarvis does

Jarvis buys cars directly through the We'll Buy Your Car programme, and you do not have to be buying a car from us to use it. The valuation is obligation-free, so you can find out what your car is worth and walk away.

It starts as an online assessment based on your car's details and condition. If the car needs a closer look, you bring it to one of our eight locations for an in-person inspection. You deal with the same dealership team from the valuation through to payment, and payment is made once the sale is finalised and the paperwork is complete. The timing is confirmed with you upfront, so you know what to expect before you commit to anything.

We buy a wide range of cars, SUVs and utes, including makes we do not hold a franchise for. Jarvis has been trading in South Australia since 1984 and employs more than 250 people across the group, so the buyer on the other side of the table is a local business with a name to protect.

What you need before you sell

  • The registration papers, and photo ID matching the registered owner.
  • Both sets of keys if you have them, plus the logbook and service history. A complete service history genuinely moves the price.
  • The payout figure from your lender if there is finance owing on the car. You can still sell a car with money owing on it, but the debt has to be cleared as part of the sale.
  • A clean car. It sounds trivial, but presentation affects the assessment on every option in this list.

Which one should you pick

If your car is desirable, priced under what a dealer would charge, and you have a few weekends free, a private sale will net you the most. If you want it done this week, without strangers at your door and without chasing the paperwork, a dealer offer or a trade-in is worth the difference in price. Most people underestimate how much of their own time the private route actually costs.

If you would like a number to compare against, get an obligation-free valuation and use it as your floor. Even if you go on to sell privately, you will be negotiating with a real figure instead of a guess.

Common questions

What is the fastest way to sell a car in Adelaide?

Selling directly to a dealer is the fastest. There is no advertising, no dealing with private buyers, and the dealer handles the transfer paperwork. Jarvis will value your car and, if you accept, manage the paperwork and payment from there.

Do I have to buy a car to sell mine to Jarvis?

No. The We'll Buy Your Car programme is open whether or not you are buying from us. If you do decide to buy, you can put your car's value toward that purchase instead of taking the cash.

Can I sell a car that still has finance owing on it?

Yes. You will need the payout figure from your lender, and the amount owing is settled as part of the sale so the car transfers with clear title. Get the payout figure before your valuation appointment so nothing holds the sale up.

How much less will a dealer pay than a private sale?

A dealer offer is normally below a strong private sale price, because the dealer pays to recondition the car, warrants it, and carries the risk of holding it until it sells. What you get back is speed, certainty and no private buyers to manage. The gap varies by car, so the useful move is to get a valuation and compare it against realistic advertised prices for the same model and kilometres.

Do I need to get my car valued in person?

Not always. The valuation usually starts online from your car's details and condition, and an in-person inspection at one of our locations is arranged only if the car needs a closer look.

Is the valuation obligation-free?

Yes. You can review the offer and decide not to proceed. There is no cost and no pressure to accept.

Whichever way you go, start by finding out what your car is actually worth. The valuation costs nothing and commits you to nothing, and it turns the whole decision into a comparison of real numbers.
